Duties.- The fatigue undergone by the sepoys was very great. The long and harassing marches, and perpetual escorts were most trying, especially as a march of 10 or 15 miles entailed the ascent and descent of hills a couple of thousand feet high. The sepoys' marching order equipment weights upwards of 50 lbs.; this to a man of small stature, as the Goorkha, and out of health from imperfect feeding, is a severe strain on the system. Night duties were also very heavy. In some camps the sepoys had not a night in bed for a week at a time. The number of weakly men increased to an alarming extent towards the end of the expedition. |
