Accommodation.- The troops carried no tents, and when long in the same place were cantoned in Naga huts. These are large, and will accommodate 20 to 30 men each, but the sanitation of a Naga village is terribly bad. Large flocks of cattle are stalled in it every night,and the dung is allowed to accumulate in heaps on every side. At Sachima, where the Head Quarters were for long established, " we lived," says Dr. O'Brien, " literally on a dung heap," diarrhoea, dysentery, and disorders of the liver were common at this place, and also at Konoma. At Kohima the station is on a fresh site, quite a mile from the village. |
