In a former letter, No. 168 of the 22nd ultimo, I gave an account of the action taken by me on receiving the news of the disaster in the Naga Hills, and I have now the honor to give a narrative of the events that have since occurred, the principal of which has been the relief of Kohima by me on the 27th ultimo at 4 P.M., when the garrison was reduced to the last extremity, and in such a position that a day's delay might have settled their fate. |

(24) The distance from Manipur to Kohima is 95 miles, the last 80 of which are in the hills, the time occupied in transit being usually eight days, some of the marches even then being rather severe. At this season of the year the distance is somewhat increased, as in one place a detour of some miles is made in order to avoid the rice cultivation. |
