6th January, Friday. Keruphemah sent in its coolies by 8.30 a.m. this morning and as the Piphemah men had been waiting for l/2 an hour already I determined to send on all the loads I could and leaving a guard over the rest of the baggage I started off for Kevemah at 10 a.m. accompanied by Mr. Ogle. Enroute and close to the village itself we met the men I had despatched last night (to fetch more coolies) and they informed me that they had only succeeded in obtaining 10 men and that only with the greatest difficulty so I took the opportunity on going into the village to call up the Peuma and express my displeasure at the delay he had caused me and on telling him that several loads had been left behind for the safe arrival of which into Sachemah I should hold him responsible. He promised me that he would see that every load was safely delivered. After Mr. Ogle had taken down fresh points we marched on to Keruphema and from thence to Sachema which we only reached late in the evening having gone over at least 18 miles. About 8 p.m. the 10 coolees from Kevema turned up and learning that there were 4 loads still left behind I know what endless trouble I shall have to get it on again. |
