11th March, Monday. This has been a great holiday. First of all we went down to the Sijo accompanied by all the young men of Sakhaboma and after having bathed we picked out several big slabs which were then carried up the hill and my brother having carved out the name Sakhapoma on the centre slab (a bit of hand slate) in large capitals, we went through the ceremony of erecting this primitive monument, and after planting two fir trees on either side of it, drank hot grog all round to the future prosperity of Sakhapoma. Each chief making a regular [] as he took the liquor. I was rather amused at their insisting upon my fixing the centre slab in position as well as upon my planting out the fir trees with my own hands. [17] Having yesterday received a copy of the proceedings of the Agent Governor-General North East Frontier in the case of Queen versus Pengule, Zuhe and Hichole, I have to-day sent off Zerile of Jotsoma and Lelhur of Kigwemah to Chadumah with an offer of pardon to Zuvakhre on the condition that he will come in at once and give his evidence in the case above alluded to. |
