15th January. We moved camp back to our old ground below Phunumah today (one of the Sopromah group) and Austin was again occupied the whole day in the survey work which is getting on famously, notwithstanding the passive resistance of the Manipuries who instead of aiding us in our by no means easy task, have been throwing every conceivable struggle in our way. However I hope to get through the work in spite of their opposition for the late orders of Government are now so distinct regarding the matter of this long pending boundary question, I consider it would be most impolitic to show the slightest hesitation in carrying them out. |

I am sorry to say the Major and his Manipuries have declared that they cannot obtain any rice from the Sopromah men owing to their crops having suffered a partial blight this year, however I don't believe a word of this story for if true, I should certainly have heard something about it the other day when we were encamped here. Anyway, I shall find out the truth tomorrow morning. |
