18th February. Had another visit from Majors Tongal and Baloram who came accompanied by some 6 or 8 Nagas said to belong to Ngari, Thisah and Khangdai. (Evidently Manipuri names). The "Majors" stated that these Nagas had come in to enquire whether the Sahebs were going to treat them as they had treated the Thybong (Shipvomah) men, a piece of impertinence to which at my suggestion Colonel Thomson replied "Tell them that if they treat us as the Shipvomah men treated us we shall treat them in exactly the same way as we treated the Shipvomah men". This reply had the desired effect of shutting them up at once for on receiving it the Majors said something in Manipuri and telling the Nagas to go away, immediately changed the subject, evidently thinking they they had caught a Tartar. |

In the afternoon I received a note from Austin asking me not to expect him back before tomorrow as he had been unable to get beyond Bishonpore yesterday and as I have again been down with fever half the day and no answer has yet been received from the Rajah, I have written to tell that there is no need of any great hurry just at present. |
