10th March. Thomson received a telegram this morning from the Foreign Secretary to the effect that the survey work might go on if there was no apprehension of resistance from the Nagas and that the Maharajah was to be told that he must cooperate in every way but that the boundary would be subject to final decision after the Government had heard all the Rajah had to say and he immediately went over in person and explained its contents to the Rajah and told him that he wished all arrangements should be made in order to enable him to accompany the survey party which would leave Manipur on the 15th en route for the watershed, the Rajah gave no decided reply but asked for time, however as Thomson tells me he gave him to understand most distinctly that I and he would leave on the 15th under any circumstances and that he had now no chance left but "must cooperate in every way". I fancy we shall have no more trouble. |

Ogle returned in the evening and I was rather amused to hear from him that at a village named Yongbalangkhong, one half of which is occupied by Kukies and the other half by Nagas, only about 14 miles from this (Imphal), he had come across some 5 or 6 skulls, several of them freshly taken, and he had found that two other villages (Making and Thumbajong) in the same neighbourhood were at open feud so it would appear after all that Manipur is quite helpless to keep peace even close to the valley and yet the Rajah is endeavouring to make out that he can and does exercise an active and beneficient control over the Tribes as far off as the Angamie of Kohimah. |
