1st April. Halted at Paowi. After sending down twice to the Major I am happy to say about l p.m. he sent word to say that he had given orders for the Thana to be removed across the watershed back to the Manipuri side, and about 3 p.m. my Inspector came in and reported that the sepoys had all turned out and that the huts had been burnt to the ground. After this I had a long talk with the Paowi Nagas and learnt from them that the Manipuri sepoys had come and planted their Thana at their village about 8 moons ago but why they could not tell me. They said they had first been visited by the Manipuries about 6 or 7 years ago. That they had not seen them regularly every year since then. That they had only seen them at an interval of some 3 years. That the Manipuries had attacked and destroyed Vapvemi and the other two villages, because they had refused to pay them any tribute. That this is the first occasion that the Manipuries have ever paid Vapvami a visit. They say the Manipuries have been telling them that it is all very well they have got the Sahebs with them today but they will have the Manipuries with them always. |
