[9] 9th April. Thomson wished us all goodbye and started back for Manipur whilst Austin, Ogle and I went off in the opposite direction en route for Samaguting. At Tengiphemah Ogle left us to go to Sikhami (from whence he has to visit and take bearings from Tellizo Peak) whilst Austin and I went on and encamped on the site of our old camping ground on the Zullo below Phunami (one of the Supvomah group). Whilst passing through the village I heard that this very morning the Phunami men had a fight with the men of Viswemah which ended in the latter losing two killed and having one wounded. From the Phunami men I learnt that this feud is one of very long standing indeed (as in fact I know before) and that in this instance the Viswemah men had come right up to where our camp is now pitched before they were discovered and put to flight. I am also told that the wounds inflicted on either side were nearly all gun shot wounds. Phunami they say themselves is the proud possessor of 5 guns whilst Viswemah I learn from the same authority possesses only 3. |

As I hear from the Manipuri Subadar (who has accompanied us as far as the Manipuri limits) that Thongal Major is going to halt at Makel (one of the villages on the watershed and close to this) in order to enquire into the matter of the feud between Maram and Mao I have written a note to him telling him of the fight that took place this morning between Mao and Viswemah and asking him to come on here in order that I may discuss the matter with him and settle what is to be done at once so as not allow of his having any excuse to step across the border after I am gone. |
