The next tribe Meeyangkhang is composed of nine villages situated to the South of the Murams. It partakes more of the character of Koupooees than of its northern neighbours. The Meeyangkhang village is celebrated for its fine terraces for cultivation. This tribe does not keep slaves, but I believe, some of its members buy them with the view of gaining a profit from their sale. Each village has its chief, a chief in nothing but name. Amongst the nine villages composing this tribe is that of Tunggal which claims to be the birth place of the establisher of the present Munnipore dynasty. This tribe, the Murams and Mows, do not go bare behind, but wear a black cloth round them like a tight dhotee. This cloth is ornamented with rows of cowrie shells. |
