34. The Deputy-Commissioner has given a table, comparing the prices of most of the common articles of consumption in 1886-87 with their prices in 1883-84. It shows that many articles have decreased materially in price, while with the exception of tobacco, none have got dearer. The most noticeable changes are in articles of local production, such as potatoes, milk and dried fish. Potatoes were shown in 1883-84 as costing from Rs.15 to Rs.40 a maund, while now they are sold at from Rs.6 to Rs.10. |

The rates of wages remained unchanged throughout the year. In the Angami country, 8 annas is the regular price for a day's work; among the Lhotas and Kacha Nagas, 4 annas only is paid, while from Nichuguard to Kohima the rate charged for carriage remains at Rs.4 per maund. The latter rate is undoubtedly high, but it has had the effect of inducing up-country contractors with droves of ponies to carry for Government and thus lightened the burden of impressment on the Angami villages roundabout. Large numbers of Manipuri Nagas and Kukis were also attracted to the route by the high rates. |
