8. In December 1886 a village, named Phozami, beyond Manipur territory to the north-east, raided on the village of Phao within Manipur territory, and killed 7 persons. A Manipuri force was sent in April 1887 to punsch this raid. The Manipuris burnt Phozami, but on their return they were attacked near Somra by the villagers of Somra an Phozami, who killed 14 and wounded 23 Manipuris. On the news of this defeat reaching Manipur in June 1887, the Senapati and Balaram General went out to the scene of the action, with two companies of the Maharaja's 'Sir Paltan' and a number of irregulars. They found the Somra village deserted, the inhabitants having fled to the hills above. The Manipuri troops burnt Somra, captures some old women and children, and returned to Manipur, the rains preventing a long campaign. |
