text: | The name Konyak, applied by British administrators to a large and by no means homogeneous ethnic group, is derived from the word 'keniak,' which in the language of a small number of villages means "man." It was first heard in the village of Tamlu, which together with the whole tract of country west of the Dikhu River was taken under British administration as early as 1889. |
