women's hair style among Thendu and Wanchu |
text: |
Among the Thendu Konyaks a woman's hair style was indicative of her social status. All women, except those of a numerically insignificant "slave" clan, who had their heads close clipped, wore their hair long, but in the villages of the Wanchu group only women of noble birth were entitled to long hair and women of commoner clans, even those married as secondary wives to a chief, had to shave their heads. |
