text: Harpoons of the retriever type were mainly used for spearing fish. They were made up of a plain wooden shaft and a socketed single-barbed head, which was so loosely attached that it left the shaft when it pierced the fish; the coils of the retriever cord unwound as the prey made off and the floating shaft served to point the position of the catch.
