absence of specialist wood carvers |

Though there were no professional wood-carvers among the Konyaks, some artists were famous far beyond the borders of their own village. Nevertheless, it was unusual to employ a wood-carver from another village when a new bachelors' hall or chief's houses was to be built. If a specially skilled artist lived in a tributary village, however, a chief might invite him to execute some of the carvings on the new building. |
