text: The small hut serving the blacksmith as a workshop stood near his house. In it was the furnace, worked by bellows of the horizontal, one-piston type. Glowing charcoal was used to heat the earthenware air chamber, and the smith, holding the red-hot metal between tongs, hammered it into shape on an iron anvil and cooled it in a stone trough filled with water.
