text: On two sides of the dancing ground there were groups of dwelling houses separated one from another by narrow lanes. The houses all faced the street, but often stood so close together that their roofs almost touched. Where the ground sloped away from the back of a house, it was usual to raise the back of the veranda on high poles and thus gain a level expanse of floor.
