Three large posts, the central one as much as 3 feet in diameter, supported the front of the roof and a corresponding number were ranged along the back of the porch. The style of the carvings decorating such posts has already been described, but not all morungs were entitled to all types of carvings. In Wakching, the Thepong morung contained figures of tigers, but not those of men or elephants, whereas the Oukheang morung was decorated with representations of elephants, but lacked representations of men and tigers. The three remaining morungs, known as Ang-ban, Balang, and Bala were, however, permitted carvings of both men and elephants, but no tiger appeared among the motifs adorning their posts. |
