text: | Rice was by far the most important and also the most highly valued crop. When its young shoots covered the hill slopes with a dense carpet of luminous green, the villagers enjoyed little leisure, for in between the rice sprouted weeds, and these had to be laboriously eradicated. Each field was weeded several times, and as the cultivated areas were large, men and women spent many weeks working with bent backs in their fields. |
