incest within clan a crime ; a recent case |
text: |
The reaction to clan incest was quite different. Sexual intercourse between clan members was considered a crime and traditionally punished by banishment, but in practice the sentence was often modified. In Wakching only one case had occurred in recent years. Yongyong, a man of Bala morung and Leunok clan had committed incest with Shekio, the divorced daughter of his father's brother, who, after leaving her husband, had been given shelter in Yongyong's house. When their love affair became known, both were formally banished. Shekio went to live in Wanching, but Yongyong though forced to abandon his house and his wife, found refuge in the house of a clansman. Later he married another wife and Shekio married a Thepong man and returned to Wakching. |

Another case of clan incest occurred in Wanching. There, the ruling chief had sexual relations with a daughter of his father's brother. When the matter became known, his subjects deposed him and exiled the girl. She went to Shiong and subsequently married another man. |
