text: Yet, in the villages of both groups society was divided into aristocratic clans, clans of intermediate status, and commoner clans. Whereas in a village such as Wakching the members of chiefly clans enjoyed few tangible privileges, the chief of a large Thendu village wielded the arbitrary power of a true autocrat.
