A chief's subjects also cooperated in building his house, and the houses of some chiefs were of impressive size. At the time of my earlier fieldwork the house of the Ang of Hangha measured over 360 feet in length. The interiors of such houses contained great halls comparable to those of a morung, which were used for similar purposes, as well as a great many dark little rooms inhabited by the chief's numerous wives and children. In the room in which the chief received guests stood a carved bench, decorated sometimes with carvings of hornbill heads, and on this "throne" none but the chief might sit. |
