text: | The fines imposed by a chief and his council were normally shared between the chief and the members of chiefly clan, but in cases where a complainant had suffered loss or injury, as in the case of theft, he would receive a substantial share in compensation. This was a principle at variance with the practice in Wakching, where compensation was rarely awarded. |
