We may wonder whether a system of repeated intermarriage between aristocrats and commoners is not inconsistent with an ideology which sees society as constituted by two or more socially distinct classes. Are we justified in correlating the division of the Konyak tribe into the two cultural groups known as Thenkoh and Thendu with the contradistinction between two political systems, one of which can be labeled "democratic" and the other "monarchic," or should we regard Konyak society as a continuum in which "democratic" and "monarchic" systems merge one into the other and such characteristic institutions as the morung with its age groups have shown themselves capable of adjustment to either system? |
