Before reaching puberty boys and girls took little notice of each other, and only brothers and sisters were sometimes seen together, but as soon as young people began to develop an interest in the opposite sex, their attitude changed radically. In public they still maintained a certain reserve, but there were numerous occasions when boys and girls could meet in an atmosphere free of the restraint demanded by etiquette. |
