wedding procession; compulsory absence of bride's male kin |
text: |
The bride's father slaughtered another fowl and gave it to the go-between. Accompanied by her mother, her sisters, those of her brothers who had established independent households, and her father's brother, as well as kinsmen, kinswomen, and girlfriends, the bride went in procession to the groom's house. The bride's father and those brothers who still lived in the parental house were not permitted by custom to participate in this part of the wedding celebrations. This compulsory absence of the men of the bride's household is not easy to interpret, and the Konyaks provided no explanation. |
