text: | The need to divorce one wife before being able to marry another related only to men of commoner status. For them, monogamy was obligatory, while men of chiefly clan could be married simultaneously to two or more wives. In Wakching there was at the time of my stay only one polygamous marriage, but several of the men of chiefly clan had had two wives, and the chief Chinkak had had three. |
