The fathering of children outside wedlock was no serious consideration. One young man of Wakching, who had married a girl of the neighboring village of Chingtang, but whose bride had not yet joined him, diverted himself with casual love affairs. Asked whether he was not apprehensive of the amount of compensation he would be asked to pay if he made one of his girl friends pregnant, he replied with typical Konyak frankness: "To sleep with a girl is enjoyable, and what does it matter if I have to pay a brass plate?" |
