Marital fidelity was also sustained by a belief in supernatural sanctions. Gawang, the sky god, withheld sons from men who deceived their wives and slept with other women. Similar consequences resulted from a wife's adultery. Thus, it was said that the senior wife of the Ang of Longkhai had no sons because she had had a love affair with her husband's half-brother.
