no obligatory widow inheritance |
text: |
Occasionally, it happened that a widow married her deceased husband's younger brother or one of his close kinsmen, but such a union was a matter of choice, not an obligation, and no additional bride price was required. If a widow married a man of a clan different from that of her late husband, however, the new husband had to pay a small bride price to her father or to her nearest kinsman. The kinsmen of the late husband had no claim on the widow or to any bride price paid for her. |
