text: The Wanchus believed that everything on this earth had a counterpart in the land of the dead. "Below Niaunu," they told me "there is a corresponding village, the Niaunu of the nether world, and below the chief's house there is again a chief's house." However, they added, whereas "there are many chiefs on this earth, there is only one ruler of the nether world."
