Those who were bent on acquiring a head, and with it the rank and tattoo of a head-taker without risking their own lives, could buy slaves which were killed in cold blood. In the past the people of Wakching had occasionally bought such slaves from villages further to the south, and some of my informants described concrete instances of such killings which were staged outside the village in simulation of an ambush.
