Other offenses as well were punished by Gawang. Men who were unfaithful to their wives and slept secretly with other women were punished by being deprived of male offspring. All Konyaks believed that it was Gawang who bestowed children on people, and to the question why this or that married couple had remained childless, I always received the same answer, "Gawang does not give them any children." |
