text: Compared to Gawang, the spirits of the earth, the forests, and the rivers were not very important, though at times it was necessary to placate them with offerings of chickens and pigs. Occasionally, ordinary mortals could see the spirits of the wood or of the springs and streams as they slipped by, but only men endowed with special gifts could see Gawang in their dreams, and they described him as a tall Naga with spear and dao.
