text: I have refrained from including in this account of personal experiences and anthropological observations any comment on the political events which in recent years have disturbed the peace of Nagaland and attracted a good deal of attention both inside and outside India. In the absence of first hand knowledge of the course of events, no useful purpose could be served by expressing an opinion on the causes and the history of a movement which aimed at the establishment of an independent Naga state and resulted in a long drawn out struggle not only between insurgent Nagas and the Government of India but also among the Nagas themselves. Readers of the last chapter may be able to form their own opinion on the state of affairs prevailing in 1970 in an area where I was able to move about unhindered and talk freely to men and women, many of whom remembered and welcomed me as an old friend.
