text: Hutton's and Mills' studies had covered most of the southern and western part of the district, but information on the tribes to the east and northeast, many of whom lived in territory beyond (3) the borders of British India, was extremely scanty, and even the Konyaks, the northern neighbours of the Aos, though partly administered since 1911, had never been studied. Other tribes to the east, such as Sangtams and Changs, had been visited only occasionally by punitive expeditions and survey parties, and beyond them, where white patches stood out from the map, lived Nagas never seen by the eye of an outsider.
