After a night and day in a train rolling northwards through the plains of undivided Bengal, I crossed the Brahmaputra by ferry at Gauhati and slept on yet another train. Next morning the scenery had entirely changed. Dense jungle dripping with last night's rain hedged in both sides of the railway running through the length of (4) Assam nearly as far as India's northeast frontier. My destination, the station of Manipur Road, could not be far off. |
