text: Most menhirs stand in pairs or in long double rows. Wealthy men have set them up to commemorate their fame and generosity, and to enhance in a magical way the fertility of their fields. Only for the first of the long series of Feasts of Merit is the Naga content to erect two stones. To attain the higher degrees of prestige four, eight, and even ten menhirs are set up. Great is the cost of the sacrificial animals and of the food required even for the first feasts, expenses increase with every stage, and only very few men ever complete the full series.
