text: Nlamo stayed with me until I left the Naga Hills and accompanied me on all my tours as interpreter and factotum. His faithful service found its reward when Mills got him a clerk's job in the office of the Governor's Secretary in Shillong. There I met him in 1944. He had turned into a most respectable civil servant and was happily married to a Khasi girl. When the Japanese threat was at its gravest he went with an Allied column as guide and interpreter through parts of the Lhota country, and he was full of the changes that the war had brought to the Naga Hills.
