Chapter Thirteen. The Camp On a Peak |

grave of favourite hunting dog on pole |

Outside the village our attention was attracted by a small hut on high bamboo poles. It contained the corpse of a favourite hunting-dog, and there were a monkey-skull and several cane rings, tallying his hunting successes in the same manner as on the graves of men symbols tally the feats of the deceased. We chose a site for the camp in a small dip in the ground, overgrown with grass, and set two pickets on the surrounding hills. For though Pangsha was still far away, we were in the middle of the much troubled area, near the borders of the three tribes, Chang, Yimsungr, and Kalyo Kengyu. |
