I have never seen more miserable creatures than these five. "slaves": a young woman, a youth of about twenty, two small boys, and a small girl. After the massacre of their relatives they had been dragged off to hostile villages, conscious always of the terrible death awaiting them. All through the hills the tales of (123) human sacrifices among those tribes in the east were well known, and the two adults, at least, could have had little doubt as to their ultimate fate. |
