The gaonbura who had welcomed me had still a head-hunter's face tattoo, and he said that only after the ritual bringing-in of the Pangsha heads did he get his face tattooed. As we left he produced a small dao and gave it to me as a memento. With Mauwang, his wife Likau, and the beautiful Ngapnun dead, and the morung sculptures destroyed, I departed from Longkhai with the feeling that a cherished dream had been cruelly shattered. |
