All Good Friends: Donations from the Friends of the Library
From the start, Cambridge University Library profited from the
liberality and foresight of benefactors. Its oldest existing catalogue,
dating from the early fifteenth century, names the donors of most
of the volumes listed, and in the succeeding centuries the Library
has been immeasurably enriched by significant gifts from patrons
such as Theodore Beza, King George I and Viscount Morley. But the
desire to augment the Library and assist its users has not been
limited to those with magnificent treasures to present: the practical
goodwill of all well-wishers is greatly valued. For twenty-five
years, the Friends of Cambridge University Library have served as
a focus for those seeking to further the Library’s aims, collections
and activities. This exhibition displays a sample of the books and
manuscripts bought, contributed towards, and donated by the Friends.
It salutes and celebrates the Friends’ imagination, energy
and generosity.
