Modern Private Press Books

Eccentricities

since commercial considerations are not necessarily of primary importance to private press printers, and because their print runs are usually very small, it is hardly surprising that the temptation to experiment is often hard to resist. Formats can be adopted which would be unacceptable or impossible in a commercial context. Broadsides and single-leaf keepsakes have always been a favourite medium, but many other unusual shapes and formats have appeared. Variations on the pop-up book occur, and the eminent practicality of commercial publishing becomes even more apparent in the contemplation of how a triangular book might sit on a bookshelf. It is not uncommon for books to be issued with coins, medals or other objects, but much rarer is the deconstructed book reduced to an illegible object.
