The Rampant Lions Press

the Rampant Lions Press was founded by Will Carter. He started his printing career at the age of 12, and produced the first book from the Press in 1936. His aim was ‘fine jobbing printing’, and many of his productions were printed for other publishers such as the Chilmark, Clover Hill, and Rainbow Presses. At first, Carter combined his own printing with a career in commercial printing firms, but from 1949 he devoted all his time to the Rampant Lions, together with some type designing and letter-cutting: his woodcut designs published in 1982 as Carter’s Caps have provided the initial letters for the wall panels in the Exhibition Centre and on these pages. In 1966 Sebastian Carter joined his father as a partner in the firm. Cambridge University Library has recently acquired the archive of the Rampant Lions Press.
