to all the sons of our holy mother the church that shall see or hear this present writing our brother Roger prior of the convent wall church of the blessed virgin st mary in Colne in the diocese of London and the convent of the same place and Roger the perpetual vicar of the church of Colne of st andrew sent greeting in our lord god be it known to all men that are under you that for as much as between us the prior and convent aforesaid of the one part and me Roger the said perpetual vicar of the other part upon the ordinance or assigning of the portion of the vicarage of the church aforesaid for the good of the peace and profit of both parts and that hereafter there arise no matter or strife or dissension for the same portions we have made an agreeable and real composition in this manner namely that the said Roger the vicar and his successors for ever shall obtain a competent mansion with the houses and buildings gardens and yards situate in the market place of Colne aforesaid and also that the same vicar and all his successors for ever shall take and obtain all the altarages with all the tithes of hay of the meadows of the same parish except the tithes of hay of the meadows of the lord earl and of all our meadows and also all the small tithes of the same parish except the tithes of the mills of Rich of Chaltenheie and all our mills and except the tithes of our monastery and the manor of the lord earl whatsoever they shall be to wit so that all the vicars pay to the archdeacon of the place the procurements and rents to him belonging forever and the same vicar and all his successors shall pay to the vicar and his successors forever a yearly rent of 4d for two parcels taken out of the boundage of the said prior and convent in witness of all these things the seal of the said prior and convent and the seal of the dean of Chelmsford for the procurement of the said Roger the vicar are interchangeably set to these indentures dated at Colne aforesaid the third of the ides of may in the year of our lord 3.5.1355
