inquisition taken at Earls Colne on 15.3.1Chas1 before Edw Bridgwood coroner upon the view of the body of Jn Upchar of the same husbandman the jurors say that Rachel Upchar widow 5.3. there gave the said Jn brandy mixed with rats bane with the intention of killing him he believing it to be medicine drank it he lived for nine hours afterwards and then died Jn Upchar of Earls Colne husbandman dec husband of Rachel Upchar being sick of a fever on 5.3. there the said Rachel gave him a poison called ratsbet in gunpowder mixed with brandy he drank it thinking it was medicine and died nine hours after pleads not guilty acquitted witnesses Eliz wife of Edw Layer labourer Susan Barr spinster Dorothy Hempsted spinster
