July: 1: The week past god was good to me in my health, and in the mercies of my family in providing for me, in all my straits, I was this week so taken up with businesses, and partly so indisposed to study, that I was wonderfully unprepared for the Sabbath: and I account I had a check for it, the lord in mercy make me more to attend to my studies for that is mainly my work the good lord in mercy give me strength against corruptions, and grace that is most opposite to them: the news from Ireland this week was sad that the enemy was come before Dublin, the lord in mercy provide for them if it be his pleasure, and give us success against them, the lord was good to me this week in keeping me from divers temptations and lusts, oh purge my heart thoroughly I entreat you, god was good to me in the Sabbath notwithstanding my neglect, which I desire to acknowledge and give him the praise of the same.
